StatCounter: BlackBerry Defeats Symbian in Indonesia for Internet Access

July 26, 2011

StatCounter as an independent agency, tracked the statistics of Internet access, have a web app called GlobalStats. If we look at the data captured by StatCounter in Indonesia, there was a monumental shift in June 2011. For the first time, accessing the Internet via BlackBerry beat Symbian-based phones. The margin is very small, only the decimal part of the 38% share. In movement, the value that is owned by BlackBerry phones has not increased significantly, but Symbian has decreased quite dramatically. From 52% value in May 2011, Symbian fallen to 38% in June 2011.

In comparison, for the month of June 2011, globally Symbian is still leading the way for Internet access with a value of 33%. IOS, Android, and BlackBerry trailed with a value of 20%, 18%, and 12%. Globally there is an upward trend for Symbian and Android, while the downward trend is obtained for iPhone and BlackBerry.

Back to Indonesia, the decline of internet access via Symbian is of course not surprising. Access to the Internet via mobile [which incidentally is concentrated in large cities], Symbian based phones [Nokia] enthusiasts is lessen. Mobile phones platform like BlackBerry, Android, and the iOS gain a larger share of the spotlight. Not to mention operators are lowering rates of Internet use [unlimited] for smart phones, especially BlackBerry, making many consumers turning to personal comfort.

However, statistically speaking, accessing the Internet through a feature phones Sony Ericsson and Samsung are still larger than Android and iPhone in Indonesia. On the graph, iPhone [iOS] is not showing a significant number and range from under 1% of total access.

Once again these figures do not indicate ownership. Surely I’m sure the sales of Nokia middle class [based S40] mobile phones are still greater than the BlackBerry. Nevertheless, these figures disclose information that it is not necessarily for Nokia phone users using it to surf via the phone. BlackBerry itself began to show spurs since last September, skyrocketed in the second place.

It is noteworthy that “unknown” cell phones occupied the third position. Unknown means the name is not known in the arena of global mobile phone market. I am assuming that the unknown is composed of “Chinese” mobile-phone with MTK based like Nexian, CSL Blueberry, and others. Overall, it’s worth taking 8% of share. Android itself having a slight decreased from May to June 2011, noted on 3.9% share.

Statistics which presented by StatCounter obtained from the records of 15 billion hits per month based on tracking that installed at more than 3 million sites. Access from Indonesia only in May 2010, have been listed around 450 million hits, and certainly this year has increased dramatically. Although the mobile trend move very fast in Indonesia, StatCounter noted that a comparison between desktop and mobile access in Indonesia is not much shifted from the figure of 85% and 15% for desktops.
