Akamai: Indonesia is The “Champion” of Internet Crime

How many titles should be given for Indonesia relating to internet crime? Once Sophos and Kaspersky issued a report that Indonesia is included in the country’s biggest spammers in the world, Akamai – a company that deals with Internet content delivery to end-user – has confirmed that Indonesia recently become “champion” for the biggest internet crime origin country according to state-of-the-Internet report in the third quarter of 2011.

These crimes included attacks on port microsoft-ds sharing (port 445), telnet (port 23), WWW / HTTP (port 80), HTTPS / SSL (port 443), and Microsoft SQL Server (port 1433). Indonesia mostly attacked port 80 and port 443 – which is used by Internet service. Indonesia became the champion with 14% of the total attacks in the world, followed by Taiwan, China, the United States and Russia. This figure is up nearly double from the previous quarter which was only 7.4% of the total attacks.

Earlier in the second quarter, Myanmar has won this championship, but suddenly they disappeared from the list in the third report. According to Akamai, the possible disappearance of Myanmar from the list is because the attack is off or the perpetrators of the attacks have been moved to another country to do the same practice.

We shouldn’t be wondering as Indonesia is still not ready with the crime threat on the Internet, both on legal and law enforcement side. This is concerning as the penetration of Internet in Indonesia is growing rapidly in the last ten years. We hope relevant parties would be able to respond this serious problem, thus Indonesia would no longer include in the Internet crime table for a long time.

As addition to criminal attack information, Akamai also provided reports about the speed of Internet connection in various countries around the world. The average Internet connection speed is 2.7 Mbps in the world, with South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan became the top country. The average speed of Internet connection in South Korea is 16.7 Mbps, 10.5 Mbps in Hong Kong, and in Japan 8.9 Mbps. The average speed in Indonesia is 0.75 Mbps.

According to Akamai, the definition of “broadband” is Internet connection speed which has 2 Mbps at least. So, on average the Internet connection in Indonesia is still below the broadband quality. Communication and Information Minister himself stated that 2012 would be Indonesia Connected and 2016 would become Indonesia Broadband. I’m curious about the internet speed in South Korea by 2016.
