NFTs from famous sports players are nothing new. The latest example comes from retired Indonesian badminton player Tontowi Ahmad, who recently launched a sports-themed NFT collection on Ethereum.
Titled “The World Champion of Badminton”, the collection features 1,000 unique NFT assets that portray Ahmad during his participation in the 2016 Summer Olympics, in which he won a gold medal in the mixed doubles category with his partner, Liliyana Natsir. Some assets also showcase relevant properties such as the gold medal itself, as well as the racket used by Ahmad in the match.
“With this badminton world champion NFT product, my intent is to allow badminton lovers in the country to collect what we have achieved while fighting for the best achievements at the 2016 Rio Olympics,” Ahmad said during a press conference held at the Ocean View Resident Jepara on July 4.
The NFT collection is a collaboration project between Ahmad and an Indonesia-based blockchain company Unisons Cryptolab. According to Ahmad, some of the sales proceeds will be donated to charity through Unisons’ charity program. Some of the priorities include food and social assistance for nursing homes, poor people, orphans, health and educational assistance for underprivileged children, environmental sustainability, and assistance in providing access to clean water for areas affected by drought.
Unisons Cryptolab’s CEO Maria Murliantini commented on the launch, “Our hope is for the community to become one of the stakeholders for the ownership of trophies, medals, costumes or other forms of achievements, both domestic and international, in the form of digital NFT assets and become part of world history.”
“By owning The World Champion of Badminton NFTs, stakeholders, collectors, and NFT traders will have an important role in social service activities, namely helping the underprivileged and those in need,” she added.
As of this writing, The World Champion of Badminton NFT collection is already live on OpenSea. Prices for each NFT are listed at 0.1 ETH.
