Two China-based payment services, WeChat Pay and Alipay, will soon to be available in Indonesia through a partnership with PT Bank Negara Indonesia Tbk (BNI). The result is to be available for public by the end of the year. Currently, WeChat Pay and Alipay cover more than 90% e-money-based transaction in China.
Quoted from Kumparan, Dadang Setiabudi, BNI’s Tech Director confirming the the partnership with both payment services. He said the planned partnership is on the last stage and soon to final.
“BNI and WeChat Pay, also BNI and Alipay are in a legal process and soon-to-be-finished. The form of partnership is for BNI to be an acquiring and official settlement bank for the inbound transaction of WeChat Pay and Alipay from China to make transactions in BNI’s merchants,” Setiabudi explained.
Later, WeChat Pay and Alipay are integrated with Quick Response Indonesia Standard (QRIS) Code available in BNI’s merchants. It means the GPN standardized QR Code should be capable to be scanned through WeChat Pay or Alipay.
“Yes, indeed, to be a part of BNI’s merchants,” he added.
The central bank is giving its blessings. Mirza Adityaswara, BI’s Senior Deputy Governor, in his previous statement, has encouraged Alipay and WeChat Pay to explore partnerships with local banks to run business in Indonesia.
