Kompas, the largest newspaper syndicate in Indonesia, always tries to be the first time for everything. After becoming a pioneer for Augmented Reality, the using of QR code and making application for the BlackBerry platform and Cisco IOS, this time Compass become one of the media that presents their application for BlackBerry PlayBook, the latest tablet from Research In Motion.
Applications for this Playbook is created using WoodWing solution owned by the Dutch who have experienced more than 200 iPad applications associated with digital media. Kompas newspaper itself won the Silver Award in the category of tablet in the WAN-IFRA’s Asian Digital Media Award 2010 event.
This time Kompas is presenting Jendela, which is a Kompas Editor’s Choice feature for Playbook users. Although the tablet is not yet officially enters Indonesia, this does not reduce the enthusiasm of Kompas to be the first in Indonesia to build applications on the BlackBerry Tablet platform OS from QNX. As quoted from his press release, Rikard Bagun, Editor-in-Chief Compass said, “We want to provide the best media experience for our readers, no matter what platform it uses.” Unfortunately, because Playbook has not officially exist in Indonesia, we cannot test this application.
Kompas Editor’s Choice for the Playbook is created using similar materials to its iPad version. No wonder if the content is considerably very prepared. Remember, once again what Kompas submit for Playbook is not the paper version but the feature edition. Currently the version presented are the text and digital images, but in the near future it will be served daily plus video contents that had been around for iPad version. For you who have the opportunity to hold or have Playbook can download it via the App World. For its first edition, the size is large enough, about 33MB.
According to John Fong, CEO of Serious Technology which is a main partner (Gold Authorized Solution Partner) WoodWing in Asia, the difference in making Playbook application to iPad is in the ratio. IPAD is using the ratio of 4:3, while the Playbook uses a 16:9 ratio. Of course, it’s beyond the technology used by each platform.
In addition to Kompas, the technology in manufacturing application for Playbook owned by WoodWing also implemented for Fortune business magazine owned by Time Inc. and automotive magazine Car and Driver from Hachette Filipacchi Media. It is predicted by analysts that the Playbook will be sold up to seven million units by the end of this year, where only yesterday it was reported that 70 thousand units sold Playbook calculated on the first day.
Until now, ZDNet reported that over 1700 applications are already available on the Playbook platform (BB Tablet OS). In comparison, for iPad itself when launching iPad 2 was mentioned there are more than 65 thousand applications listed special for iPad. Supposedly if Kompas would want to become the first on all platforms, it also needs to consider the availability of applications on Tablet Android (Honeycomb). Once again salute to the Kompas efforts to become the pioneer for Indonesian media in the global digital arena.
