Nokia has shown an interesting yet in another point its rather disappointing statistic facts about Ovi Store. In Indonesia, Nokia still dominate the cell-phone market, especially for mid-low class cell-phone. Indonesia is one of the 15 largest markets for Nokia in terms of downloading from Ovi Store.
Nevertheless, there is no Indonesian developer who can achieve 1 million downloads or even more, while its stated that there’s more than 5 million downloads per day at Ovi Store, which from the total Ovi Store visitors, 80% can be converted into downloads. This is a rather disappointing facts compare to the total of Indonesian who use Nokia as their cell-phone.
For the Asia Pacific region, outside of China, the countries that achieve more than 1 million downloads are India, Taiwan, Japan and Singapore. While Opera Mini and Opera Mobile itself had become an overall winner for the most downloads. In general, the total downloads of Opera Products (Opera Mini 5-6, Opera Mini 4.2, Opera Mobile 10-11) reached an astonishing number of 13 million downloads in 190 countries. You can read more facts about Ovi Store from the link included above.
Why application developer from Indonesia hasn’t achieved that kind of milestone? There are one million reasons if we break it down step by step. But right now, let’s study about the success story of Cell Co from Japan and Breakdesign from Singapore. Cell Co from Japan had achieve 7.2 million downloads, while Breakdesign has achieved a 2.1 million downloads.
Cell Co has a leading product, Flash Greeting Mail for Nokia which utilize Adobe Flash Lite player and Java technology. In the other hand, Breakdesign develop an animated game called Roach Game, where the objective of the game is you only need to exterminate a bunch of cockroach that swarm around the monitor. The best thing is, Breakdesign packed it in such a beautiful/eye catching animation.
From there we have a conclusion that a product that has a global market share, uniquely design, interesting visual, addictive and also giving more added values to its user will get bigger chance to be downloaded by many users. Right now, a lot of Indonesian Developer is pushed to make a breakthrough in their applications based on the conclusion above. We hope to see the results soon enough.
That is if the local developers want to target the global market. But they must conquer the domestic market first. As a sample, here are the top 10 in demand Nokia cell-phone in 2010: 2330 Classic, 2600 Classic, 2700 Classic, 5130 XpressMusic, 5800 XpressMusic, 6300, C6-00, E63, E71 and N73. I’m sure those 10 handset had a significant percentage from the total of Nokia users in Indonesia. If you want your applications or games perform optimally, you have to make sure the application have to run perfectly in those ten handsets.
Furthermore, because nowadays Ovi Store downloads can be purchased directly from your cellular operator (currently only Telkomsel has that facility, others will join soon), you can do a little survey, what application had the most downloads (especially the commercial one) so in the end we know Indonesian users characteristic.
Last but not least, Nokia Indonesia initiative to boost the progress of applications and games development deserves a commendation. There are some developers who get an endorsement from private parties and just now Nokia held a Mobile Game Developer War, the purpose of the event is to get as many developers as possible to develop applications and games in Nokia platform. Developer who needs help from private parties is sure to get a serious respond as long as they convince that the application holds a great value.
I have dream by the end of this year there is an application from Indonesia which can achieve 1 million downloads milestone at Ovi Store (and possibly at other platform of application store). Any developer dares to take the challenge?
