Another local mobile startup startup emerge, and this time they’re going head-to-head with mobile chat apps such as eBuddy and Fring. The app’s name is IM-Ku which means “My IM” in English. The app, similar to other chat app, allows you to add friends and chat with them and also send photos directly from your phone. But what’s unique about IM-Ku is they also allow user to send Audio files to their friends and play directly from inside the app. This is an interesting feature, because in Indonesia, no one actually uses Voice Mail and it’s not a very popular method of leaving messages.
Another interesting feature that IM-Ku have, is they uses your phone number as a unique ID for user recognition, this makes it easier for people to invite friends directly from their Phonebook by sending the download URL via text messages. This rather “conventional” method of making the app goes viral can actually gain traction among Indonesian user since most of them are still hooked-up via text messaging which also explains why Blackberry Messenger is very popular.
IM-Ku is available for so many different devices such as Elzio, HT Mobile, Ivio, KTouch, Lexus, Nokia, Skybee Mobile, Blackberry, SPC Mobile, Taxco, Vitell, XP Mobile and also Java-powered mobile phones. Based on these devices supported we can assume that IM-Ku is actually targeting mid-lower mobile phone users, probably on rural areas which is a good target since they’re pretty active using their mobile phones but barely touched by big mobile players such as iPhones and Androids.
You can download the app via their website http://get.im-ku.com/ or by typing IMKU and send it via text message to 9800 (local numbers only).
i think the ability to send audio files and phonebook integration will be its strength… ke tkp dulu mau download hehehe
