Currently, BlackBerry might still leading in Indonesia and has became the most desirable smartphone but seeing the latest trend, Research in Motion as BlackBerry creator must be careful with Android. IDC (International Data Corporation) issued a fourth quarter 2011 (Q4 2011) report stating that Android has obtained the title as smartphone platform with the highest growth in Indonesia.
As reported by The Jakarta Globe, IDC noted that the rate of delivery of Android mobile phone maker (manufacturer) to a distributor in Indonesia reached an increase up to 28% that the previous quarter of up to 61% when compared with the same quarter last year. Unfortunately, the recorded number is for “delivery”, not “the real consumer sales” but IDC believes that number already represents the real growing needs of an Android phone.
Even so, of course smartphone sales figures are still not as high as feature phone. IDC reported that around 44 million phones are delivered to Indonesia last year and only 13% of these (5.27 million units) is smartphone. If broken down in to brands, BlackBerry still dominated the smartphone market while Nokia dominates feature phone market. Samsung that restlessly releasing low priced Android phones gets higher delivery value up to 116%.
Android mobile phone’s price in the range of $130 (Rp1,2 million) becomes the middle to lower class choice. The price, when compared to BlackBerry products, will get a mobile phone that considered more sophisticated and can accommodate a wide range of applications. Is the year 2012 will be the year for Android to be booming in Indonesia? BlackBerry market has reached its saturation during the last 3 years, by that, I am sure it is not impossible for Android platform to make this happen.
