The projection of smartphone growth in Indonesia doesn’t seem to show any decline even a bit. Borrowing the data from Consumer Barometer, Google Indonesia presented the fact that 43% of Indonesian population use smartphone, while 15% of them operate PC and only 4% use tablet.

Consumer Barometer is an online tool that presents and compares the behavior of digital consumers as well as their shopping behavior all around the globe for free. The data includes how often people go online, their used searching and research method, and shopping pattern. The data also presents the information about utilized devices. Consumer Barometer 2015 adds 10 more sectors, including shoes and clothes, property, flight, hotel rooms, cosmetics, music, and restaurant.

Last year, a similar data showed that smartphone adoption only touched 28%. Today, if we look at the most current data, then we may conclude that one of every two Indonesians has a smartphone. The research also implies that Indonesian consumers are now more convenient to do online transaction through their mobile devices.

“Now the consumers do their daily activities online, can’t stand to be away from screen and devices, thus it’s important for brands to be there during the ‘micro-moment’ (when consumers make the preference),” said Google Asia Pacific’s Chief Marketing Officer Simon Khan (4/8).

He continued by saying that the utilization of Consumer Barometer and other tools can be done not only for trades, but also to provide and distribute content to the right audience in broader scale as well, which is positive for the brands.

Google Indonesia’s Head Marketing Veronica Utami added her opinion on the mobile-first concept in Indonesia. She said that Indonesia is one of 21 countries where smartphone is more common than desktop.

“30% of smartphone users search using their device at least once in a week.”

Consumer Barometer in Indonesia also presents the following data:

  • 67% of smartphone users in Indonesia purchase products using their smartphone.
  • 30% of Indonesians love learning through online videos.
  • 50% of online consumers in Indonesia compare products prior purchasing them.

With so much data available, Google Indonesia expects to encourage more local developers to use them while creating their apps.
