Doa Harian, Trending Local App at Google Play Store

July 8, 2012

Around these last two weeks, if you notice the main page of Google Play, you can see a local apps named Doa Harian – daily prayer in Indonesian (free app) which developed by a web and mobile app developer company from Yogyakarta, Onebit Media.

It’s interesting that this app can ‘win over’ many similar praying apps in Google Play. Maybe because of the coming of Ramadhan, around 79,000 users installed this app to their Android device.

Quite a big number for local apps that only get to launched on June 4, 2012.

In a casual meeting with Fachry Bafadal – Founder and Managing Director of Onebit Media, he says that the total of user who has installed the apps is 79,331 users (by the time the interview is done), 58.5% is from Indonesia, 37.37% from Malaysia, 2.17% from Singapore and the rest come from the other countries such as Brunei, UK, US, Hongkong, Oman, dll.

Actually, this app is very simple. When you open this app, you will be directly presented with a collection of Moslem’s daily prayers. Starting from the prayer for entering/exiting the toiler, prayer before adzan, before/after eating prayer, and many daily prayers.

Next, when choosing a prayer (i.e: prayer before entering the toilet), the user will be directed to the prayer in its original Arabic writing, how to read it and the meaning of the prayer. A very simple apps and supports Moslem’s daily religious life.

It can be concluded that some factors which made users installed this apps are; the first is the icon of this apps, where the design is clear and can described the content inside and able to attract user to download and install the app. Interesting icon is the key and first way to attract user to download and install the developed app/ga,e. And the icon represents the content provided in the app.

Second is the user interface and user experience of the app. Basically, user does not want to be hassled with an app with difficult navigation or user experience. User also chooses an app which is nice to look at because one of the keys to make an app comfortable for user is interesting user interface and simple user experience/navigation.

The third is language. Indirectly, language is a target market. Two words in Bahasa Indonesia are written on the icon and name of the apps, namely ‘Doa Harian’. As you know, Bahasa Indonesia is not much different from Malay. From above statistic, 58.5% downloader comes from Indonesia, 37.37% from Malaysia (people who use Malay). 2.17% is from Singapore and can be predicted that the user of this apps in that country is Moslem who speaks Malay. And the rest from other countries most likely understand Bahasa Indonesia or Malay.

Other possibility on why this app is downloaded by many is because of the timing; the timing before Ramadhan where many Moslem use religious segment’s apps.

It is very good news that an app by developers from Yogyakarta managed to be Trending Apps at Google Play. Now let’s wait for what other surprises Onebit and other developers from Yogyakarta have to offer.

Disclosure: OneBit Media and DailySocial are under the same incubator.
