Google Indonesia compiled the most popular search during 2014. According to the Google Trends, BlackBerry was the most wanted instant messaging throughout the year, beating last year’s champion WhatsApp Messenger as the runner-up and Line in the third place. Now this is interesting, considering that XL Axiata (XL) and Global Web Index (GWI) declared WhatsApp as the most popular chat app in Indonesia.
Unlike last year, when Google Trends put a focus on instant messaging, this year’s figure covers broader and more general search. Among many categories, instant messaging remains to be too tempting to resist.
The big picture of the instant messaging industry in Indonesia during 2014 shows that WhatsApp undisputedly dominated the market. XL revealed that out of its 31,2 million users who use internet, the number of BBM users shrinked up to 10%.
In line with XL, GWI suggested that 78 percent of internet users in Indonesia surfed via their mobile devices during the third quarter of 2014. While none of them used BBM, 34 percent of them used WhatsApp.
This data by the Google Trends shows that actually BBM is not dead. Yet.
“Google is Indonesians’ favorite search engine. We will work harder to accommodate more relevant search,” said Google Indonesia’s Consumer Marketing Manager Sandy Tantra.
