Akamai’s State of the Internet report has always been a scourge for Indonesia. No wonder, the report, which is published every three months, always describes Indonesia as a joke in APAC due to its poor internet quality. However, the latest published report by the institution surprisingly put Indonesia on a respectable position in term of internet connection speed and quality, letting the country to enjoy a wonderful leap from the previous version.

As Akamai reported, Indonesia had an average internet connection speed of 3,7 Mbps during the period (third quarter of 2014). It was 149% better than the data in the same period a year before, and 49% better than the quality in the second quarter of the same year. Due to that fact, Indonesia’s internet quality has now been closer to China, leaving those of Vietnam, the Philippines, and India behind. As for this category, South Korea remained on top globally with 25,3 Mbps average speed, followed by Hong Kong and Japan.

When being broken down based on the percentage of consumers who have enjoyed broadband internet, Indonesia, again, showed an astonishing growth. There were 35% Indonesian users who use internet connection with speed more than 3Mbps, 3,3% who have more than 10 Mbps internet connection, and 0,9% enjoy more than 15 Mbps internet connection. In each of those categories, Indonesia experienced more than 4 digit (>1000%) of growth compared to the previous year’s figure.

Unfortunately, this time Akamai didn’t involve Indonesia in the average mobile internet speed category.

The report reflected that Indonesia has had an incredible enhancement of its internet connection quality. This was supported by the fact that Telkom Speedy didn’t want to miss the chance of blossoming in the broadband internet era, while new players like MNC Play Media have started implementing Fiber To The Home (FTTH) technology which offers high speed internet at reasonable price.

We assume that the Indonesia’s internet statistics will only get better this year, following the more intensive implementation of LTE and adoption of broadband internet all over the country.
