9GAG has become one of phenomena of world’s online world which has changed the way humor is consumed on internet. Ray Chan, 9GAG’s Founder and CEO, voiced out his enthusiasm to localize 9GAG’s content for Indonesians in yesterday’s 9GAG Meetup Jakarta (2/2).
During a session, he and other 9GAG personnel shared their story about the background of their very own simple website called 9GAG which was found back in 2008. After struggling for years, that simple website enjoys an outstanding number of 73 million unique visits in a month.
“No matter how useless your website is to some, a website would still be beneficial to some others. Moreover if you put all your heart into that project,” Chan commented on 9GAG’s achievement.
He also appreciated Indonesian netizens for their contribution in 9GAG’s vast growth. Yesterday’s meetup, which became the company’s first in Asia, was reported to beat the number of participants in Germany and Brazil. Further, he revealed his plan to localize 9GAG’s content to get closer to Indonesians. Even though it has yet planned to open an office in Indonesia, 9GAG opens the opportunity for Indonesians who want to join its team.
Previously, 9GAG had strategically partnered with Indonesia-based Touchten Game Studio through a project named “Redhead Redemption”, 9GAG’s very first mobile game which has been downloaded one million times from the Google Play Store so far. And, as Chan confirmed yesterday, it won’t be the only game it develops. This is surely a good signal for other local game developers to follow Touchten’s foot steps.
