Indonesia is crowned the king of social media 2014 in the Global Web Index’s “15 Trends for 2015”. Not in term of total number of users, but in the percentage of three most popular social media account possession. Not a surprise, since 96% of Indonesian internet users own at least one Facebook account, 84% of them possess a Twitter account, and 83% of them have at least one Google+ account. No other countries on earth can level with it.

Vietnam, for instance, does have high percentage of Facebook and Google+ account possession, but not for Twitter. In contrast, Saudi Arabia has a high number of Twitter account possession, but lack of Facebook and Google+ owners.

In general, most of social media owners reside in developing countries in Asia and South America where there are plenty of youngsters, while the trend isn’t that appealing in developed countries. Interestingly, Japan shows an anomaly where the number of Twitter users is a bit higher that Facebook account owners.

Another East Asian country, China, has a low percentage of social media account owners, but that’s not surprising, since most of foreign social media are restricted to enter the country.
