A number of Indonesia’s biggest online content companies today gather round in the famous Cyber Building landmark in downtown Jakarta to announce their latest movement to enrich Indonesia’s internet industry. The pledge, dubbed “Klik Indonesia” created to create awareness towards Indonesian consumer to help grow the local internet economy.

The movement is basically an effort to make Indonesian content companies to be the home-winner, emphasising on the fact that 70% of the content consumed by Indonesia market are not locally made. “Most people aren’t aware that this means we’re giving away revenue to foreign companies instead of growing local ones”, said internet veteran of whom leads the movement, Henri Kasyfi Soemartono.

According to Soemartono, the movement’s objective is not to promote anti-foreign companies in Indonesia, but focuses more on building awareness to Indonesian consumers about local internet content that is just as good. One of point of concern, Soemartono added, are the local carriers who keep bringing and promoting content providers from outside of Indonesia instead of promoting the local ones. “Why aren’t the carriers promoting local apps and content providers?” asked Soemartono.

This effort is supported by numerous internet-related organisations such as Mobile Monday, iMOCA (Indonesian Mobile Content Association), APJII (Indonesia Internet Service Provider Association), MASTEL (Indonesia Telematics Society), AINAKI (Indonesia Content and Animation Association). Not only from the organisations, this effort is also supported by three government ministries: Ministry of Communication & Informatics, Ministry of Travel & Creative Economy, and also Ministry of Education.

So far, this effort has drawn more than 300 content owners who pledge their websites to support the Klik Indonesia movement registered on their website. For more information about the effort and join the movement, check out their official website.
