Perhaps this step is considered as an evolution in the use of consumer applications and also to encourage women (housewives) and national cuisine lovers to have more reason to have an iPad.

Apps Foundry, iOS-based application developers which held by Willson Cuaca, which is also part of the East Ventures, released the application of 25 Indonesian recipes that are equipped with cooking methods and photos. The title is Selera Nusantara, this 10.4MB application is already present in the iTunes Store and can be downloaded at a cost of $ 0.99.

This application comes as a form of cooperation between Apps Foundry and Kartini magazine, a leading national women’s magazine that has existed since 1974. Published by Trinaya Media Group, Kartini magazine presents a collection of recipes in every edition and special edition full of recipes are published four times a year.

The twentyfive recipes are divided into two categories, Seafood Nusantara and Pedestrian Snacks. The recipes were created in the English language so not only Indonesian users could enjoy it, but also international users who love Indonesian food – including non-Indonesian people – who missed our cuisine.

Selera Nusantara facilitates the recipes archiving and cooking with the following features:

  1. Search recipes by keyword
  2. Storing recipes in a shopping list
  3. Send a shopping list via email
  4. A food timer
  5. Detailed recipes: food description, number of servings

It is interesting to review that this application is made by understanding the behavior of people who wants to cook, this app have features that are available to facilitate the cooking productivity, like measuring time (timer) and alarms feature. Moreover, the recipes can be converted into a shopping list that can be sent via email, so user don’t need to worry about the recipe because each recipe has been tested to ensure each step can be applied.

According to Willson Cuaca, Selera Nusantara was built by combining quality content from Kartini magazine and the latest technology from iPad devices that provide greater value to those who like to cook. To me, this is excellent, tablet users – especially iPad – are entitled to get interesting experience like this and things like this prove that the tablet can be developed to embrace a wider market. Housewives may not be an easy market for technology companies, but this kind of application shows that the niche in this segment has a great potential.

As far as I know, there are no similar application that reviews about food and the cooking methods from a local developer. Most of these applications come from outside developers. Previous Apps Foundry also quite successful to open an online magazine market here with SCOOP. There are100,000 magazines that have been digitally distributed directly to the iPad readers.
